The code for MariaDB is open source and a backwards-compatible binary drop-in replacement and enhancement for MySQL. It provides all the functionality of MySQL - client APIs, protocols, and structs are identical - plus broader compatibility with storage engines, faster performance via DBUG, CHECKSUM and character set optimizations, and several extension modules and additional features. And compared to MySQL, MariaD promises more extensive testing and better bug cleanup.
