Web 3.0 may be subject to the same technospin as Web 2.0 but unlike its predecessor this term is allied with an official W3C initiative- the Semantic Web - which they define as "a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries ... a collaborative effort led by W3C with participation from a large number of researchers and industrial partners ... based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF)."

RDF extends the traditional linking structure of the World Wide Web to use uniform resource identifiers (URIs) to refer to "triples" which define the relationship between things as well as the two ends of the link. RDF data can be represented by a number of different serializations including RDF/XML, Notation-3 (N3), Turtle, N-Triples, RDFa and RDF/JSON. This structured and semi-structured metadata can be mixed, exposed, and shared across different applications via the process of linked data applications development, a precedent for which being that you publish your linked data on the Web.
